When a female mates with many males, then having a long one will allow a male to put sperms closer to the uterus than sperms that are already left there by other males. It gives the male with the longer penis a higher probability of fathering young. Having one with a larger diameter, OTOH, does not give anyone an advantage. Longer therefore is better than thicker.

As a result, we see chimps having a longer penis than the gorilla, because the gorilla will guard his females and prevent them from mating with other males. The chimps cannot do the same because they must band together to defend the troop. Beating each other up over the right to mate will make that impossible. If a bully stopped you from having sex, then would you help him in a battle by risking your life. As a result chimps do not fight for the right to mate, and a longer penis is the only good way to have a reasonable chance of fathering young.Females will mate with many males because it reduces the chance of infanticide. If a male has mated with a female, he would be less likely to harm the baby because it may well be his. In contrast, gorillas that take over a harem for the first time will kill all the nursing young so that the females can come to heat quicker and be impregnated by he new male.

Human ancestors, having evolved on the dangerous African savanna, are in a similar situation as chimps. They need to band together to defend themselves against predators, and therefore they cannot beat each other up over the right to mate. As a result, humans have also evolved a long penis, in fact the longest among all primates. The way we did that was to lose the penile bone. Mammals with long penis, such as horses and whales, have no penile bone either. All other primates have the penile bone. We do not yet know when the penile bone was lost, but it is quite possible it was lost in the australopithecines.

The penis has gotten shorter in some populations after the invention of agriculture 10,000 years ago, because farmers do not have to share their women with other men, if they can settle down, build a structurally strong building to live in and not have to worry about wolves or lions or hyenas or tigers attacking them. Since there is no longer the need to put sperms close to the uterus if one can keep one's mate from having sex with other men, then a male with a shorter penis will still leave descendants. Humans that still live in groups with multiple males may still require a long penis to leave descendants. In fact, when Europeans first arrived in the New World, they find that Native American women were allowed to have sex with anyone, except for close relatives, because Native Americans were not practicing farming yet, and they still live in nomadic groups with multiple men banding together to hunt and gather their food. Agricultural societies OTOH practice monogamy and adultery are not tolerated. Monogamy ensures that males who help raised the young, as men ni agricultural societies do, are not raising other men's young.

That all sounds like somebody making excuses for having a tiny penis.

Not much. If it doesn't fit in the area it's supposed to go to procreate, the dude won't be procreating and spreading his genes.

A large penis is part of what makes a man look hot as a sexual prospect. It's the samee principle of a big butt on a woman, what's the real purpose? it's there to advertise sexual fitness.

When in times of environmental stress and the population of females decreases dramatically the males with longer penises can fellate themselves easily and thats always a good thing to be able to do, I would say.

    So, yeah. There's that.

First, you would have to define large. However, providing it can do its principal function, which is that the urethra that runs through it transport urine, the body's main waste product, to the exterior.

Again providing it can deposit semen in a vagina it can fulfil its role in sex. Therefore, the size of the penis is not particularly important.

Most men have, by definition of course, a mean sized penis, which it is not as large as many men assume or would like to think.
