My Republican father-in-law goes on about how America has the greatest healthcare in the world when his own family can't afford healthcare?

He and his wife used to have insurance, but they couldn't afford to stay on it and have been uninsured for a couple of years now. Even when they had insurance, it was basically a money pit and they couldn't afford to use it even when they absolutely needed it. They have essentially been putting off receiving even basic healthcare for years and are holding out for when they become eligible for Medicare to see the doctor even though they have some health issues that need to be addressed immediately. Their children have never even had insurance and can't afford to see a doctor, so they wait until the situation becomes unbearable to do anything.

Yet whenever anyone criticizes the American healthcare system or points out some uncomfortable truth about it that doesn't mesh with his conservative worldview, he immediately comes up with some hollow defense of the system that usually amounts to little more than an angry incoherent lie. He does it for other issues as well, but it just seems absolutely insane that someone in his shoes would support Trump and hold these views.

Your father-in-law sounds like your typical working class Republican.
