Whatever happened to hand cranking a car?

to get it started?

Bring it back, I say..Then we can finally do away with ignitions, computerized chip keys, etc.

Those of us who have had to use starting handles are glad they are gone.

    • Modernized versions - like those used on motorcycles - are MUCH easier to use than their 1930's counterparts!

Then you would lose half of the car buyers.  Women buy a lot of cars.  That is why the ignition starter was designed.  Otherwise you would have many girls that could "clothesline you" with their muscular right arm. WWE wrestling term.

, Besides the days of low compression 4 cylinder engines is long gone.

, If women could not start and drive the car, then who is going to pick up the BEER?

I still have a starting handle for mine with the hole in the bumper. Never used it for starting though. This is on a 1968 model Land Rover, but also on 1972 versions.

If you actually had experience of these, you might also know about the chances of breaking your wrist when the starting handle flies back, as many people did. We could start our car like this in an emergency and it got us out of the odd scrape, but now starter motor technology is so much better that it no longer necessary and has gone the way of things like fan belts.

You are correct except for maybe the fan belts. They may not drive the fan but there are still belts to drive other accessories.

That would also do away with some people being able to start their cars...me, for instance.
