The Bible documents how the lifespan decreased from the time of Adam and Eve down to the time of Noah by the time Noah was on the earth the lifespan was down to about five hundred years. The lifespan has degenerated to the time of 70 or 80 years. The point of all this documentation in the Bible is to let human beings know that there used to be some form of a link between man and God that kept mankind living longer. As human beings have drawn further and further away from God. That link becomes less and less. And therefore the lifespan has decreased more and more. What is the actual science behind this nobody actually knows.

It all depends on what you choose to accept and base your life on. You could, of course, base it on myth and a myth which seems to contradict itself. In your myth when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, an event called the Fall, humans became prone to sickness and death. How then did they live for a thousand years? Complete rubbish!

Of course, no human has or ever could live a thousand years. Even the majority today will never reach the age of 100. People in the developed world now live longer than ever before and longer than in Biblical times. This is the result of two things. One is improvement in hygiene such as refuse collection, sewage disposal and potable water. The other is medicines, such as vaccinations and antimicrobial therapies.

Life expectancy is still lower in the developing world, especially in countries ravaged by civil unrest. Indeed, even in these countries if you survive infancy and early childhood you still have a reasonable life expectancy.

However, living well over a hundred years is mythical, let alone a thousand. Just incredible nonsense without a single shred of evidence to support it. And, please do not quote the Bible at me. An anthology of works of fiction is not evidence.

They didn't, they counted moons (months) as years, so 900 = 75 years . (A bit like dog years). Someone living for 1000 years is as beliveable as the flood being over   15 000 ft deep. (The Ark was supposed to have come to rest on Mount Ararat in Turkey). We are worried about 2 inches with climate change.

The average lifespan of humans in the wild is around 35 years (Paleolithic fossils, contemporary hunter/gatherers).

Post-neolithic, when those stories were around, lifespan dropped to 20-25 years due to new diseases caused by proximity with livestock animals.

However, the lucky few who went through accidents and diseases could live as long as modern days elder: 80 and over.

To the younger generations, they seemed to have been there for "generations and generations" (in fact 3 or 4 but nobody knew for sure).

Those elders became the respected Patriarchs. And since everything tends to be exaggerated over time by oral traditions, the aged increased up to 900 years! until the traditions were written for good in the Bible.

That's why the earlier Patriarchs were also the older.

This is not biology, but the transmission of oral traditions is studied by anthropology.

The only reason that figure is the average lifespan is because you have to include all the deaths of the kids who died of childhood diseases.

Methuselah lived to be 969 years old. I believe the long life was taken away from mankind because of his sinful ways!

Because people had trouble counting back then and guesstimated. To count past ten, they had to take off their shoes. To count past 20, they had to drop their pants.

Only a few lived that long:

Adam and Eve were Nephilim Sons of God sent to TEACH mankind like the Nodites. Once a Nephilim mate with mankind (forbidden fruit), they (DIE), lose supernatural power as Adam and Eve did. When a Nephilim dies, he lives about 900 more years as a Nephil. Man at the time of Adam lived about 40 years and stood about 4ft.. Adam and Eve stood 9ft. Eve mating with the 4ft. Nodite produced Cain who lived about 500 years and stood about 7ft.. Noah is thought to be the last of the Nephils, but reproducing with a tribesman reduced life-expectancy of his sons to about 500 years. Noah's sons mateing with non-Nephil woman reduced child's life expectancy to 250 years and height about 5ft., etc...

The real question should be why is there absolutely no evidence of people living long in the past and every piece of evidence suggest that life spans have been increasing.

Because the accounts of any living 1000 years were 100% MADE UP.
