Why do students always seem to side with the bullies in situations like this?

Whether it’s elementary, middle, or high school. A bully, for example, challenges a student to a fight on the playground after school at 3:00. The student does the right thing and skips out on the fight. But now, the whole school has labeled him a chicken

No, the whole school hasn't necessarily labeled the student who avoided the fight a chicken, because that would mean that everyone in the school was aware of what the bully did- and in most large schools, it's extremely UNLIKELY that this is the case. Even with cyberbullying being the issue that it is, rumors like this one don't spread that quickly.

Bystanders don't care about the victim. I pity the ones who are "spreading the awareness" and enforcing the "no bully zone" rule. It's truly disheartening.
