    First find the area of the whole circle.

    A = (pi) (r squared)

    Divide by 8 to find the area of each sector.

    Multiply by 3 to find the area of the dark-shaded portion of the circle.

    Subtract the dark-shaded area from the total circle area to find the area of the light-shaded portion.

    The two methods of calculating the total area should be close but not necessarily identical, since some rounding-off is always involved with the use of pi.

    Area of entire circle

    a = πr²

    a =π(23²)

    a ≈ 1,661.9cm²

    Area of 3 dark shaded sectors

    a = (3/8) of the circle area

    a = (3/8) * 1,661.9

    a ≈ 623.2cm²

    Area of 5 light sectors

    a = (5/8) of the circle area

    a = (5/8) * 1,661.9

    a ≈ 1,038.7cm²
