There are nine essential amino acids, depending on the age of the person that are classed as essential. Then there are others while generally considered to be non essential, that are also classed as semi essential. The rest are considered non essential as those are made de novo, or in the body. Those classed as essential to humans are:

    Histidine

    Isoleucine

    Leucine

    Lysine

    Methionine

    Phenylalanine

    Threonine

    Tryptophan

    Valine.

Then there are six others, that has been classed as semi essential, and they are:

    Arginine

    Cysteine

    Glycine

    Glutamine

    Proline

    Tyrosine

These the body is capable of making normally. However they only become essential, if one of the essential amino acids are either not present, or is poorly absorbed due to a  genetic abnormality.

However in children taurine is classed as a semi essential amino acid, as their bodies aren't developed enough to produce it.

Essential means you can't create them inside yourself from other things so you have to eat them.
