    No, and both sound a bit awkward. How about this?

    At first, only a few customers came in each day.

    Yes they it mean the same thing.  People in America speak American English, People from England speak the best  English, but not all of them speak good English.

    Yes. "At first" is native English that means exactly the same things as the borrowed word "initially".
