Changed fuel filter on 2006 Ford Explorer. Started it up and now the ABS and Traction Control Lights are on.  Why?

Just a guess but one of the wheel speed sensors, or associated wiring, may have been knocked loose and those systems are now not getting a reading from the affected sensor(s).

When replacing the filter either that or the connections are bad

If you lifted the car and let the wheels sag, then one of the ABS sensors may have fallen off (rust and corrosion) or one of the wires to one of the ABS sensors may be damaged.

Try to reset the light by turning ignition ON (do not start) and then disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery.  Wait 5 minutes, turn ignition OFF and reconnect battery terminal.  Start car and drive around and see if ABS light comes back. If it does, time to see a mechanic.

It's just a coincidence that the lights came on unless you tore out one of the wires running to a wheel speed sensor.

Get the codes read with a scan tool that can read ABS codes. OBD II code readers won't work unless you bought a $300 unit.

Make sure you didn't damage any brake lines while you were working or disconnected a connector and forgot

It might not be the issue but you may have dislodged a plug for the Abs system when replacing the filter either that or the connections are bad
