Are elephants close to being extinct?

    No.

    We have the following classifications:

    Vulnerable - species is suffering problems (like habitat loss or extensive poaching) that seem to be moving it quickly toward "endangered" status

    - Endangered - species is suffering severe decline and, without preservation efforts, extinction is expected

    - Critically-endangered - species is experiencing imminent threat of extinction in the wild

    Asian Elephant - endangered (population 40,000-50,000)

    African Bush Elephant - vulnerable (population 415,000)

    African Forest Elephant - vulnerable (population estimates vary wildly, from 30,000 to more than 200,000)
