What do you call voicemail that you can listen to as it's being recorded?

Like in the movies when someone is ignoring a call on purpose and let's the caller go to voicemail. Then the receiver can choose to let them finish the voicemail or they can pick up the phone and interject.

I'm writing a script and have discovered I don't actually know the term for that kind of voicemail.

It's called screening your phone calls.

That feature is called, Call Screening. Not all cell carriers offer it, most Voice or IP services do offer it, and some copper  landlines still offer it.

The old fashion call screening was done by allowing the answering machine to pick up, and people would start to leave their messages, and the user had the option to let the entire message continue recording or pick up to take the call.

That's a 1980s answering machine that used cassette tapes or microcassettes.

If your screenplay isn't set in that era, you're going to need a reason your character would use a device so obsolete--because otherwise, it will be visible as a crutch for the screenwriter.
