why is it called toyota 86?

    I usually call it a Toyota '86.

    the 86 does have genuine Toyota roots: It's named after the AE86, model code for the last rear-drive version of the Corolla and a drifter's favorite. Though rooted in Toyota history, the 86/FR-S car was developed in conjunction with Subaru, which sells its own version called the BRZ.

    It's a reference back to the AE86, the last RWD Corolla platform that is revered by many drifters and Toyota enthusiasts.
