Tripadvisor, Frommers, Fodor's-- it depends what information I'm looking for. I often use booking.com for hotels.

There are countless sources of information about travel.

Every country, every large city or tourist destination has a tourism board (or a visitors center), the web site of which provides travelers with  comprehensive information about the places of interest, things to do, where to stay, events, and all useful pieces of information (how to get there, how to get around, entry requirements, and so on).

Looking at such official and reliable sources of information is usually the first step when you plan a trip.

As for Japan, you find them here:

Then, you may have a look at other sources of information such as travelogues from people who have visited the destination you plan to visit. You may find themhere (or google it):

Finally, you may use the social networks  (Facebook, Tripadvisor, and so on) and other travelers' reviews to get answers to precise questions you may still have.
