Can incorrect ignition timing cause engine damage?

I accidentally ran my engine for a few minutes with the wires on the distributor completely mismatched. I didn’t drive it but started it twice and it only idled a few seconds each time. Is this bad for the engine?

No, not at all for the few seconds you did it. There are mechanics who have miswired the plug wires and those who have yet to miswire plug wires. Eventually, they will.

Yesss.  It CAN cause engine damage.  During sustained driving or perhaps racing, too advanced of ignition causes one problem, and too retarded of ignition timing causes another (overheating).

But in your case, I doubt there was any, because you idled and only ran a short time.

Of course it's bad for the motor. You didn't damage anything in that short of time.

If the vehicle was driven for several hundred miles that way you'd need to change the oil and filter because the un-burnt gasoline gets in the oil and dilutes it.

"Is this bad for the engine?".   It isn't good, but a few minutes won't do any harm.

It can be bad.  If the spark fires too early in the compression stroke the explosion tends to make the engine turn backwards.  I presume that if it started and ran that things were not too bad.
