# DC step down transformer...is it dangerous?

If I input 12 volts DC into a step-down transformer, and it outputs ~5amps, is that dangerous?

If you connect DC to a transformer, nothing will happen other than heat the winding and draw current.

But if/when you open the circuit, and stop the current flow, the magnetic field in the core will collapse and a voltage spike will appear in both the primary and the secondary.

No, If it is DC-DC converter Pulse Transformer,1st it s inverting DC to Ac in high frequency ,thro transformer step down to required Ac then converted into DC .In this case it is safe to handled. These type of Technique only used in SMPS circuits.

transformers don't work with DC, so you could get NO output under those conditions.

If the output of the transformer is anything besides zero when you input a DC voltage, then something weird is going on. But also, you can't input a true DC voltage. DC means the same voltage for all time .. the past, present, and future. You could put in a "step" voltage, that was zero in the past and 12 volts in the future. Then you could get a short pulse out, as high as 5 amps. But the output would last only for a few milliseconds (depending on how fast your input step was).

Yes, a fast pulse into a transformer can be dangerous. But in reality, it is very hard to create a fast pulse, especially one of less than a millisecond.

Transformer is AC parts, Input DC into it would not work as it should, just produce useless heat.

If you put 12V into a transformer it could output a pulse of any amount and could be dangerous if done correctly. The output current pulse would depend on the turns ratio and the load being driven. It will be acting like the coil in an internal combustion engine or a Tesla coil.

Transformers don't handle DC.  Don't hurt yourself.

If you put DC into a transformer it will look just like a short circuit to the DC (well, a small resistance anyway).  Transformers do not work on DC, only AC.

And no, a transformer does not turn AC into DC of any voltage.

Transformers don't work with DC. No current will flow in the secondary.

Anything over 50 mA is potentially a hazard, but I wouldn't worry about a battery.  If you dropped the transformer into a bathtub that you were sitting in, I would worry, though.
