How are magnets important to the function of electrical generators?

Most generators use an electromagnet, so there is no permanent magnet in those types of generators.
It's also possible to have electrostatic generators and there in no type of magnet in those at all.

When a magnetic flux is passed over a wire or the wire is equivalently passed through a flux, a current is generated in the wire. And that current is the generated electricity.
Without magnets, there would be no flux and thus no electricity.
