Why does my dog foam?

My dog, a mix between a lab and a pit, escaped. One of my family members tried going through the gate and he got out. When we saw him, he was fighting with another dog but a fence was between them. Then we caught him and his mouth had foam in it. Why?

Sounds like your dog was sweating.

Haven't you ever seen the spital flying when two people are verbally having it out. The dog doesn't swallow when it is in intense barking so it all gathers around & out of the mouth. Normal.

He was over heating & stressed - possibly becoming dehydrated, depending on how warm the temperature was, how long & far he had been running & how long he had been fence-fighting.  Pit bulls originate from bull dog mixes, and may of that breed easily over-heat due to the "smushed faced" characteristic of being brachycephalic.  If he is also black, or part black that coat color overheats more quickly than lighter colors.
