Why was Michael Jackson so Popular?
He was more famous than most white artist back in the 80s and he was a black man, what made him so special?

I do not see any reason why he was popular. His "singing" sounded like a baby girl squealing. He was weird and a pedophile. I heard that a Beverly Hills jeweler allowed him to try a Vacheron Constantin "Kalla" wristwatch for a weeks or so. He returned it and was sued for $1,800,000 for damages to this watch. It is quite stupid to damage such an expensive watch so badly.

what made Michael Jackson so special was him having a father, Joe Jackson, who was driven to make his son the best of the best. the white artists didn't have a Joe Jackson for a driven to succeed father. that's why Motown was very successful. all the black men, producers and celebrities alike, were driven like Joe Jackson was.

black people have had success in the music business. I know my sister liked him and had scrap book of his pictures etc, so maybe it was his looks that helped his popularity

Talent is color blind! You unfortunately are stuck on some bigoted, long outdated notion. Michael Jackson had abilities that made him into a triple threat. During his entire career his talent drew in millions of people, fans that drove his status upward. HE was able to break barriers with his music. Everything that Michael Jackson earned, he worked hard for. Luck may have played a part in all his success, but a strong work ethic is what kept him current. All anyone needs to do is check his musical evolution to see what a successful career looks like. Despite his own personal baggage, he only brought positivity to his performances.

The first great film star was Charlie Chaplin. He was the first to realize what movies could do, how to portray a character through pantomime, etc. When TV came along Ernie Kovacs showed everyone how to do comedy in this new medium. Besides being just extremely talented, both these guys had special insights into a new medium that was just then being mastered.
Michael Jackson was to the music video what Chaplin was to movies and Kovacs was to TV. He saw the possibilities of a 3-4 minute video based on a popular song. He wrote the songs, did the choreography, etc. He would have run the camera too, if he wasn't busy in front of it.
We don't think much about music videos now. Their time is pretty much over. But remember there was an entire cable network devoted to them, and in its day it was one of the most-watched networks!
You can't point to many people in entertainment who worked as hard as Michael Jackson. He was personally a little strange, we all agree. He certainly had his demons. Nobody can say he had a happy life. But he just dripped with talent. And even people who hated pop music could watch him and be amazed. He literally worked himself to death! 100 years from now, college students will see Jackson's videos and write theses about them, and how the music video affected and influenced entertainment in general.
