Actually the New Labour Government had a similar policy that did the same thing.  The Tories promptly scrapped the scheme and slashed the funding for the then UK border force.  Politics like fashion seems inherently circular.

If they Tories are serious they need to legislate against exploitative work practices and introduce an living wage.

Christine Jardine said "The policy is "based on xenophobia, not the social and economic needs of our country" and "Too many businesses are already struggling to hire the workers they need. Now the Tories want to stop them recruiting all but the highest-paid employees from abroad."

When the Royal College of Nursing has said the proposals would "not meet the health and care needs of the population", when the National Farmers' Union has raised "serious concerns" about the "failure to recognise British food and farming's needs" and when the Food and Drink Federation has expressed concerns about "bakers, meat processors and workers making food like cheese and pasta not qualifying under the new system" and they have been expressing similar views for a long time I would say Christine Jardine has explained her concerns clearly and she is absolutely right.

If the government thinks British people will take jobs in care homes looking after demented and incontinent old people without introducing pay rates that would bankrupt already struggling care providers they are living in cloud cuckoo land. Think of that if you or your parents are getting old. If the government thinks British people will work unsocial hours in unpleasant conditions in agriculture and food processing they are living in cloud cuckoo land. There is a meat processing plant near me which struggled to recruit and retain British workers and only established a stable workforce when it recruited in Portugal.

Diane Abbott hasn't the clarity of mind to know what shoes to put on.  It's politicians like her are why 3rd world countries are the way they are.
