An active pixel sensor is a camera-on-a-chip device that will contain all the components necessary to take a photograph or make a movie.

A sensor is only part of a complete camera.

believe it or not but a camera light sensor is an analog device, not digital. combining digital functions with analog on the same substrate greatly compromises both the analog and digital capability. perhaps a very cheap device would combine them but never in a camera of respectable quality.

You only mentioned one part, the sensor. Although that is the most crucial part of a digital camera, it can not function by its own. At its barest, a digital camera is comprised of a sensor, a processor, working memory and data storage. Those do not fit in one chip alone.

False. It is only a sensor. "take a photograph or make a movie" implies the data from the sensor can be stored somewhere. An "active pixel sensor" has no storage.
