Gravity, which no one seems to fully understand.

The simple answer is gravity.
All matter has gravity - you do, so do I, and so does the Earth; and - like black holes - gravitational sources attract other matter. The difference is, the mass of a black hole is so great - and, so compact - that there's a point where escape velocity exceeds the speed of light... since nothing can move faster than the speed of light, once you're beyond that point (called the Event Horizon) - you can't move fast enough to escape.
