Was the world a better place before or after the 9/11/01 attacks?

I feel like the world was a better place before the 9/11/01 attacks.

for many that didn't enjoy the benefits of a largely-false "feel good" economy, the world was not doing particularly great in the decade leading up to 9/11...

new democracies were popping  up almost weekly in the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse...but even as they cried out for leadership, the USA stood aside for the most part even as civil war and the specter of genocide returned to the European continent...

in Africa, numerous nations were being torn apart by famine and war...the Rwandan genocide is estimated to have claimed over a million lives...and yet America's perceived retreat from Africa after the Battle of Mogadishu was seen as an abandonment of its humanitarian agenda as well...

in the Middle East, Saddam Hussein was re-building his military to pre-1991 Gulf War strength, killing his own people and shooting at Coalition planes attempting to enforce the "no fly" zone... again, the USA largely stood aside save for occasional air strikes that only further enforced anti-American propaganda, portraying us as a nation content to party at home while sending missiles to do our work for us.

...a common thread in all these regions, by the way, was the rise of radical Islamists into highly-organized groups that spanned borders...everywhere sectarian strife was causing misery, they were profiting heavily from it...

...so now perhaps you understand why so many people have strong feelings when Americans talk flippantly about "how great, prosperous and peaceful" everything was before 9/11....and the many factors that made it an event a decade in the making...

That's how it feels. The 90s in retrospect seem like the one decade where everything was actually getting better and most places were at peace (after the turbulent 60s-80s). Then, 9/11 sent the USA into a "f3ck this" tailspin and now we're veering off the cliff into world wide chaos as Western democracies collapse. (That, mind you, is Russian meddling/revenge, not directly 9-11 related.).

I think when it comes to terror attacks they have gotten more bold and increased world wide, I think 9/11 made terrorists more confidence, but for the most part the world has been the same , Americans are more on edge knowing we can get attacked anywhere but the world has always been dangerous.

The 9/11 attacks did not change the state of the world.  Prior to the attack it was a world where that had the conditions that led up to it happening.  After the attack it was a world where the world dealt with the aftermath of a world that allowed it to happen.
