California residents younger than 62 years of age who wish to renew or replace their State ID card will need to pay a fee set at $29. No renewal or replacement fee will apply to holders of a senior ID card (62 years of age or older).

The State ID card is issued as a "Real" ID, and has the gold star in the upper right corner.

I didn't have to pay a fee last summer.

It is free of any fees for senior citizens.

Source(s): I live in California and am a senior citizen. There was no fee when I applied for a Real ID.
