I don't like the alliteration. Plus I've just never been keen on Mason.

I think it's okay, but I might consider the name Macon Marks instead.
Macon and Mason are both English names that derive from the French names Maçon and Mâcon, which are different versions of the same name and mean the exact same thing. While Maçon in French is pronounced with an S sound, Mâcon in French is pronounced with a hard C, just like how Macon, Georgia is pronounced with a hard C. That's why Maçon is transliterated into English as Mason, while Mâcon is transliterated into English as Macon.
Anyway, going with the name Macon will make saying his name sound like saying, "Makin' Marks," like what one hopes to do in life: make one's mark on the world.
