Is the world buying our debt because it is a safe investment or because they are afraid not to?

It's considered safe. I recommend money markets instead, but to each their own.

As such things go, the US is still the safest place to invest in. We were the first nation to recover from the 2008 deep recession for example. And we are still the number one economy on the planet.

No one buys debt because they're afraid. They buy it because the US dollar is still investment grade.

A lot of the recent debt was bought domestically by rich people and the corporations they own wit tax cut money. When we buy goods from foreign countries as imports they get US dollars. They use some of those dollars to buy Federal debt.

Because by propping up our currency, their products remain cheaper to us which allows them to make more money...to buy more debt.

they are using THEIR stash of Dollars to give their local currency world-wide buying power .........................
