Given the urgency of the situation, couldn't Kobe's pilot have simply landed the helicopter on any available ground?

rather than continue to fly in dense fog?

The most common of all aircraft crashes is when the pilot flies the aircraft into the ground. Number one culprit is inexperience and a low cloud deck or night time flying where the pilot can't fly on instruments because the plane in not equipped or they have gotten too used to visual recognition flying, using only their eyes during daylight hours. Even happens in military aircraft. Night time flying or flying through clouds is very much like flying blind. You can experiment some time on a long drive at night time on the Interstate when there's no other traffic and no street lights around and simply turn off your headlights. You'd likely crash in less than 30 seconds.

Maybe that's what he was trying to do.

It's hard to land when you CAN'T SEE the ground! The pilot flew straight into a hillside. Apparently, he didn't know where he was.

If the fog is that dense how do you see the ground to tell if it is flat or not to land.?  You can't, that would be just as risky as continuing to fly!
