Author Mary Stewart, title Airs Above The Ground; and author Phyllis A. Whitney, title Columbella?
I have two old books that don't have a "number sequence" on the inside page/back of the title page. How can I tell if they are first editions?

It's doubtful they are. Those authors had a lot of book club versions. Is the deckle edge of the pages rough? If so, definitely book club versions.

Hardcover or softcover?
English or American edition?
Here's a link to some first editions of Airs:

It's easy, Di. Just feel the quality of the paper. You can always tell if a book's a first edition by the way the paper feels more, well, "papery" is the best way I can describe it. Second and third editions feel much less papery, in my opinion. Also, they all "rustle" differently too. First editions have a more sibilant rustle, while the later editions........ don't. It's hard to describe.
