Yes, though there are still a lot of them. They are a privately held company and the restaurants are all franchise. They have been closing because of both competition by other Subway as too many and also far more competition by better quality sandwich chains and other fast food service restaurants.

I live in Las Vegas, with a massive number of restaurant choices in a highly competitive market.Looking at Yelp, by highest rating, for reasonable prices as $ or $$

sandwich shop large chains, best rating in their multple shops in the area

    #5 Cheba Hut Toasted Subs, #10 Earl of Sandwich, #27 Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, #43 Firehouse Subs, #51 Jason’s Deli, #54 Schlotzsky’s, #55 Port of Subs, #57 Jersey Mike’s Subs, #60 Jimmy John’s, #102 Subway

Just try to compare the offerings at Cugino's, made with Boar's Head Brand meats and cheeses and a full homemade menu and Subway trying to compete for a few dollars less money.

A Subway with $3 to $7 sandwiches and the overhead and franchise costs cannot compete with much better food even when subway is cheaper.

I don't know but it would not surprise me if it's happening. Since Jersey Mike's came to town several years ago I've only been to Subway twice and that's only because I had a coupon. I go to Jersey Mike's 2 or 3 times a month.

Two near me closed.  Business changes over time. Some franchisees never should have got into it so they get out.   The one nearest me is next to a publix who has much better subs. And next week they are $5.99.

No, not at all. Most of those are locally owned franchises, and some may be underperforming. However, the brand itself is not.
