How is it that I am not supposed to be offended by cuss words?

Words don't hurt, it's the intention behind them. One can joke around with "bad" words or one can insult deeply with plain language (or vice versa). If you are offended by the words themselves I would say that that is a product of conditioning rather than any intent.

Many people are offended by profanity or vulgarity. To say someone shouldn't be offended by it is unrealistic.

That is your right. However, your sensitivity does not impose that same sensitivity upon others any more than their lack of sensitivity is imposed upon you.
