Did Queen Elizabeth II threatened to change the order of succession to the British throne?

Queen Elizabeth was unhappy to learn that the Prince and Princess of Wales intend to divorce, viewing Charles' and Diana's divorce as a crippling blow to the monarchy's image.

A publication claimed that the queen threatened that if Prince Charles agreed with Diana to the start of divorce proceedings, then the queen would ask Parliament to name Prince William as her successor, thus changing the order of the succession to the throne.

There is no truth to this ignorant story. The person who wrote this story does not know how British succession works. The monarch does not choose who inherits the throne. Parliament made laws of succession hundreds of years ago, along with the law that a monarch reigns through Parliament. It is Parliament, not the monarch who would change the laws of succession. They see no need to change the laws which deem that a successor be a legitimate descendant of the daughter of Elizabeth Stuart, of the Royal House of Stuart, Sophia of Hanover. The heir is determined by birth order.

The reporter of this story also fails to acknowledge that it was the Queen who told Charles and Diana that it would be best for them to divorce. The writer of that story failed to do sufficient study and fact-gathering. The reporter preferred to publish lies.

No, she has no power to change the succession, she will be dead, the succession can only be changed by an act of parliament, and that is not going to happen,She actually wrote to charles and diana after diana's telelvision interview and said that they SHOULD divorce!

The Queen Could ask Parliament to do that however, it's a matter of conjecture whether or not it would agree. Now, the eldest child succeeds to the throne, male or female.

Why would she make a threat she knew she could not carry out? Fake news.

No she didn't because she knows that the line of succession is written into law and she doesn't have the authority to change that..

  • I imagine she would have sought advice as to whether this would be sensible or necessary and would have been told it wasn't. Otherwise it would have happened.

After their separation failed to heal their wounds, it was HRM who told Charles that it was time to divorce - that Diana's erratic and embarrassing behavior could no longer be tolerated.

Parliament decided the constitution rather than the monarch. It has been decided that the succession will not be gender specific from a date of event in the future ; I forget the details. Probably after Prince George dies. Nothing to do with Charles or Diana.
