My father failed his mother for years. Does he even deserve my respect?

He was negligent to all his elders, especially his mother.

Update:

Kristin-- Then shouldn't my Dad have respected his mother? My grandmother was a saint and my Dad had no reason to treat her like he did.

This is your choice, to respect or not respect.

Now, if we want to talk about why you are Judge and jury, I'd be interested.

Maybe there is some underlying reason your father isn't very happy with or "failed" his mother. I don't know what you mean by he "failed" her, anyway.

You don't know what his childhood was like or what happened between them. At least, you didn't mention anything here.

If he has been a good father to you, then he deserves some respect at least.

You are not as high and mighty as you may think you are. Relationships can be extremely complicated. Just because your father has a strained relationship with his mother does not mean he is undeserving of your respect. He created you for f*cks sake - you should show him respect no matter what. You're not perfect, sweetheart.
