Why have UK petrol stations significantly reduced in number since 1990s?

    There was an over-supply due to competition between brands. Whilst the number of outlets has fallen, the usage of those left has risen to compensate. The greatest market share is still held by supermarkets.

    They are more profitable car washes using cheap labour like the rest of the capitalists its forward thinking and backwards in manner Thatchers legacy that's why we have so many billionaires even a dodo can win and they do

    Many privately-owned garages closed because they were paying higher wholesale prices than the supermarkets and other big sellers of fuel. Some closed when towns and villages were by-passed.

    the margins are small so the independent ones have been squeezed out

    The supermarkets have the monopoly and buy in bulk so can afford to undercut privately run filling stations.
