Why has clothing fashion been so casual and loose since the 1970s?

Clothing means a lot less than it used to. There was a time in history where you could murder your entire family, and if you were well-dressed, no one suspected that you'd be capable of something like that.

There's less reward for tolerating discomfort these days.

I have yet to see anythin more casual - but definitely more loose - than jeggings, leggings, and various bits of stretchy material from Lululemon (among others).

In the 70's tight jeans were awesome.

Fashion changes, and then goes back.  Women in the 1920s often wore dresses that were very close to the mini-dresses of the 1960s.
