Can you start the engine without the R being hooked up on the starter

    if its factory with the factory ignition and distributor it wont start as the r terminal puts power onto the coil while its cranking. the picture shows a diode in place of the r-terminal .

    the "R"????? Meaning the red wire? No. The red wire is power.

      If the distributor is points use the yellow wire. If it has an electronic ignition it does not need the yellow wire. That wire feeds 12v for better spark quality while cranking. Points might be able to start without it but it's best to use it with a points system.
