Would you rather show off your guitar skills in the most populated subway station in nyc for tips, or make $15 working as a cashier?

It depends of the cashier job has medical/dental benefits. If yes, then the cashier job. I can still play at the subway station when not working the cashier job. The tips at the subway station won't cover medical benefits.

I'd probably make more money playing the subway station, but the income is not predictable...

Why not both? Subway station in your off-hours - like just 2 a day or every other day - and cashier for the resume.

Cashier job for sure. You get  benefits like being inside, having a consistent dream of income, not having to beg, and so on.

No one wants to see me perform so I'll take the second option

No such thing as "law of attraction". Confidence or not more like it. You'll be amazed at how low the bar is...
