Are people in UK really jailed for non payment of TV license, when many found guilty of assault aren't?

    Money is the biggest influence in a plutocracy. Violent crimes usually affect the poor. The Plutocrats like to collect revenue.

    They are usually fined (up to £1000 but usually a lot less) and given a criminal record which can harm their employment prospects. A handful are jailed, usually for trying to defy a court, which is a different offence. You cannot be imprisoned for TV licence evasion in itself, although you can be imprisoned for non-payment of a fine imposed by the court.

    Hardly ever.  The punishment is a fine, and imprisonment is only a last resort option if you don't pay the fine, as it is with any other offence where the sentence is a fine.
