It's European, and there's no reason for the plastic to last longer than the car.

Because it's 18 years old.  Plastic gets brittle over time - especially if the vehicle sits in the sun a lot.

that which is exposed to sunlight is which suffers.  The sun has been the killer of plastic.

The manufacturer of the plastic parts did not use enough nylon in the plastic formula. Thus the plastic through time is effected by the UV rays of the sun and becomes brittle and breaks easily.

Kind of like the brass from China. The Chinese do not put enough nickel in their brass so the brass is too soft and will fail if used as screws and bolts.

Because VW has always made cars with crappy plastic interiors.

Likely because it's sat in the sun for the last 18 years.
