Are you allowed to hold a receiver within five yards?

I know you can hit, touch and push a receiver within five yards but are you allowed to actually hold him?

No, because that would be holding.

No. If you mean grabbing the jersey or bear hugging the receiver, then that is not allowed. It WAS allowed during the 2013 season, when Seattle defensive backs grabbed and held receivers all season long and the kingmakers inside the NFL did not tell officials to enforce the existing rule on defensive holding. They only resumed enforcement of the defensive holding rule the next season, after they accomplished what they set out to do, and that was to give Seattle the best chance to become Super Bowl champs while depriving the Frisco 49ers the chance to win their sixth super bowl.
