I will add, you are assigned a residency (not called interns anymore but post graduate years PG_)  through a system called "match" you do not pick and apply for a residency

You must hold an MD degree from a recognized, accredited medical school, and pass all 3 phases of USMLE medical licensing exams. If you are not a US citizen or legal permanent resident AND graduate of a US medical school, it is extremely unlikely any hospital will consider a foreign applicant. There are no longer enough intern/resident positions for all of the American graduates of US medical schools. Furthermore, govt hospitals are commonly prohibited from sponsoring foreign workers.
