I believe that the current fashion for conspiracy theories started with the JFK assassination.

When the real conspirators realised that people were much too clever just to believe the official view they resorted to discrediting people.

On the face of it the whole thing was all sewn up. The events were filmed and the perpetrator was now dead so could not be questioned in detail.

How convenient. And, more interestingly, how many shootings happen these days where the alleged perpetrator dies and cannot be questioned or examined?

Then slowly, facts leak out and people have trouble joining the dots. For instance, why did Oswald use a cheap and known to be inaccurate rifle? It was known as the "humanitarian" rifle because it saved more lives in WW2 than anything else!

Why did the shells left on the window sill in the Schoolbook Repository not fit the rifle?

Why were there no Oswald fingerprints on the rifle until an FBI agent took it to the morgue where Oswald was lying?

Why can GHW Bush (CIA) not remember where he was on that fateful day? The whole of the rest of the world can!

Why are there frames missing from the famous Zapruder film?

Why is the slowdown of the President's car not clearly visible in said film?

Why was someone who was known to look like JFK killed the same day?

    I could go on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiHm2S0w3_Q

As the discrepancies kept mounting the official ploy of calling any doubters "conspiracy theorists" arose to try and contain the questioning.

so, do you think that JFK was shot by Oswald or not? why the US gov. would want to make it seem like he possibly didnt? and have him killed too? was Jack Ruby a gov. agent?

There is absolutely nothing new about conspiracy theories. People have been refusing to believe official accounts of events for millennia. Why? Because sometimes official sources DO lie, or at least don't tell the whole story.

They go like this: "Look at MEEEE! I am so "woke" that I see how all your problems are all caused by a jewish free-mason nazi-communist elite poisoning you with contrails to depopulate the world for a New World Order. You and I should make lots of babies to thwart their efforts. If you don't see it  you are brainwashed sheeple. Go watch these thousands of hours of movies on youtube! "

A conspiracy theory is an alternative explanation to the official government explanation of the occurrences of some event in human history.  Some are absolutely insane like flat Earth. Others are clearly true like not believing the official account of 9/11.

9/11?  that was the Easter bunny, right?   No, that was too complex for one bunny.  Probably was Santa's elves.   Las Vegas?  You told a joke,, right?  Or did the 'undercover arms dealer" kill all those people to keep from drawing attention to himself?   Really?

First of all...understand that "truth" is not absolute. Truth is relative, it rests in the "eye of the beholder." And that's because we all have different experiences and backgrounds. So what we see and hear, we each interpret differently. We each come up with different truths that some call facts.

So based on those different truths or facts we make choices and come up with conclusions. Some come up with the "They are out to get us and are hiding the truth from us," conspiracies. And to a point, why they come up with those conspiracies has as many answers as there are conspiracy theorists.

A large number is afraid of "big government" in general (who knows why). So they are sure big government is hiding something (like Area 51). Another large number is afraid of "big business." So these folks are sure that AT&T or Google are spying on us all as examples.

    Thats a multifaceted question

Various conspiracy theories exist. The majority are based against government, the people who control your life, and the vary from the subtle to the extreme.

Truth can be an inconvenience for a government and hinder/halt plans. So sometime, they do decide to cut corners and bypass things they shouldnt. They deny they have, but every now and then, one of the conspiracy theories does turn out to be true and not just fantasy or extrapolation.

An example of this, is the US performing medical experiments on their own citizens.

For a long time it was denied and said to be just a conspiracy theory, but enough evidence was gathered, and the government sheepishly admitted it was true, and apologized. Because the governent do lie, and they llie more than they admit to, few people, except gullible, believe them 100%

I'm sure they have been around for centuries ("the gubmint is "fluoridiatin' mah water!") and apparently people who BELIEVE "conspiracy theories" are mentally ill ("Earth is flat", the US government was responsible for the events of 9/11/2001", the Moon landings were fake", etc.)

The truth is that some forms of mental illness cannot be cured. These patients are not told the truth.
