Why would an imbalance in thyroid hormones have such widespread effects on the body?  ?

The thyroid hormone controls cell metabolism. So every cell in the body is affected.

An imbalance (either hypo or hyper thyroid) affects the body the way it does because the thyroid controls all body systems.  The thyroid gland needs to function optimally in order to maintain homeostasis (which is balance).  When an imbalance is found, doctors prescribe proper medications to correct it.  These medications, when taken on a daily basis ensure that all body systems function normally.   It is actually dangerous for a person to go without proper corrective treatment.
