There have been three KKKs. The first was started as a fraternal social club in 1865. It Although there was little organizational structure above the local level, similar groups rose across the South and adopted the same name and methods.[clarification needed] Klan groups spread throughout the South as an insurgent movement promoting resistance and white supremacy during the Reconstruction Era. The Second Klan started in 1915 based largely on the popular film, The Birth of a Nation. The earlier Klan had not worn the white costumes or burned crosses; these were aspects introduced in the film. It grow to approximately 4–5 million men. The third and current Klan has between maybe 6000 and 8000 members.

For starters, you should phrase the question in the present.
The KKK still exists.
It is a group of Protestant Christian Americans who argue for (and plan terrorist acts for) racial superiority, discrimination, and the abuse of Jews, Catholics, Muslims, anyone not of their particular faith, blacks, Hispanics, Asians and indeed, anyone who isn't white and too closely inbred to have less than 12 toes.
Originally started by Nathan Bedford Forrest, the traitor and scumbag survivor of the Civil War, it's been remade and re-adapted a number of times, but basically has the same vile, un-american ideology.
