Before we were born, were we sperm or egg?

    Sperm+egg=baby. You were non existent before that.

    Before you were born you were a fetus.  Before that you were an embryo.  Before that you were a zygote.  Before that, you were half sperm, half egg.  Before that, you were just a twinkle in the mailman's eye.

    The fusion of DNA from both. Either on its own does nothing.

    Neither contains a complete genome, they must combine to create a "whole" being.

    Sperm is the mobile half, the egg cell is much larger as it contains the molecular "machinery" to support and replicate the new DNA and turn it into a living thing, if fertilisation occurs.

    DNA testing of individuals provides independent evidence of the 50-50 genetic combination, as any persons DNA has half in common with each parent; not all from one or the other.

    That is the difference between sexual reproduction in animals and plants vs. asexual division of such as bacteria, where both parts have duplicate DNA after division.
