How to remove the covering/frames off a mirror (from a closet sliding door)?

Im trying to remove the covering and just have the plain mirror itself.  How would I go about this in the most safely manner?

They look like they would prize off - if you are lucky they are snapped together at the corner - less so if they are glued on. The backing is almost certainly bonded to the mirror and the lipping may be adhesive fixed to that. Try a top edge first as you could always cover that if it damages the silvering. I would probably try a hair dryer to see if that would soften the glue.

The covers offer some rigidity to the glass mirror as a safety feature. It may not be a safe choice to remove them.
