Is it fair that athletes make 10x more money than surgeons?

What the market decides is always fair. It might not seem that way, because doctors and teachers and emergency responders have very important jobs and in the grand scheme of things, entertainment, and sports is just one form of it, does not seem very important.
But people will gladly pay money, and substantial amounts of it, to see the very best performers. Very few would pay to watch those important professionals do what they do.
Thusly, the free market decides how much entertainers are paid. Many entertainers can't earn a living at their activity of choice and end up working in jobs and professions that pay much less than the top entertainers get.

that isn't really true though. its more like the top 0.0001% of professional athletes make 10x more money than surgeons, on a per year basis, with significantly shorter careers than surgeons. but that top 0.0001% is all you see in the news. you don't see stuff about the G league bench player struggling to make ends meet not knowing how many more years they have left before they have no career at all.

Yes. Most people can become surgeons, a miniscule number can become professional athletes.

No, it is not...it's the same in the UK...a Premiership footballer can earn more in 1 WEEK than a nurse does in 10 YEARS!!,
