How are properties of exponents used to write equivalent forms of expressions for exponential functions?

I know how to do it but I have no idea how to explain the process. Please Help!

    As one example which you probably already know, they are used to simplify or reduce expressions. 

    Like, the property a^n • a^m = a^(m+n)

    lets you simplify (3x^2y^3)(2x^5y^6) to 6x^7y^9.  

    And x^n ÷ x^m = x^(n-m) lets you reduce (4x^6y^8) / (x^3y) to 4x^3y^7
