Why do my areolas look so dark?

My areolas are light brown and I don't understand why because I am white. Aren't my areolas supposed to be lighter?, since I am white. Also, my areolas have this purplish color, is that normal?.

Update:

Well, I am Italian and so is my family, and my dad has a very dark complexion.

Update 2:

I don't think I inherit it from my mother because I have olive skin and she has very, fair skin.

Usually darker areolas mean black or Mediterranean or middle eastern ancestry. You may have ancestors you don't know about.

Does it really matter? Men don't care as long as they get to see them.

Varies widely from woman to woman depending on genetics, age, etc.

It all sounds perfectly normal to me especially if you have Mediterranean ancestry.  Breasts nipples and areolas vary greatly from one person to another
