atheists: why is it so hard for progressive Democrats to elect leaders?

In the UK people on the left manage to elect a hard left leader Jeremy Corbyn to lead the Labour party and main opposition without much difficulty, why is it a big struggle for Democrats in America to elect someone who is not a centrist?

Ummmm Corbyn got TROUNCED in the general election and is considered the worst Labour leader in history. If the idiot children running Momentum hadn't tried to foist Corbyn on the public then Orange Clown number #2 wouldn't be Prime Minister right now. Labour couldn't win an election when the deck was stacked in their favor, so don't go throwing rocks when you live in a glass house.

That will probably change over the next 30 years because the younger generation no longer buys into the "if you work hard and conform to social norms you will succeed and live the American dream" myth. That's the answer to your question. Older Americans were raised to believe in a middle way neither far left nor far right. Young people have seen that that position is a failure because it stifles freedoms such as gay rights and that "work hard and conform to succeed" is a lie promulgated by people who would happily work you to death if they were allowed to.

The Democratic party is a bit of a mess, which leads me to believe that we as a country are in a great deal of trouble.

I take it that you mean by "Jeremy Corbyn lead[ing] the Labour party and main opposition without much difficulty" you mean "Jeremy Corbyn obliterating the Labour party and main opposition without much difficulty". The December 2019 election was the worst showing for Labour since 1935 when they wanted to join the nazis. Antisemitism, flip flopping, ignoring the biggest vote in UK history, siding with terrorists: Corbyn + the left have it all.

After Corbyn got destroyed by BJ its actually even more unlikely that the democrats will elect a leftist.
