How does a train emergency release work?
UK - How does a trains emergency door release green handle work? What does it do? Does it release the doors instantly?
Also, say if the power/electricity supplied and the train was stalled between two stations, would it still release?

In short it applies the brakes very quickly bringing the train to a stop as quickly and in as short of a distance as possible. How it applies the brakes is when the emergency lever is pulled by the operator it releases all the air out of the entire system which pretty much locks up the brakes. The brakes on a train are air brakes. How air brakes work is when air pressure is applied the brakes release, when air pressure is removed the brakes are applied.

The emergency door levers are mechanical. They don't require electricity or anything to open or close. When the handle is pulled it both unlocks and unlatches the blocks holding the door shut so it can be opened and people can get out so they're not trapped inside. It works just like a modern door handle on a car's door (the lever inside, not outside). Most of the newer emergency door releases on trains and busses are designed that they drop the entire door or window pane off of the train or bus. Older styles of several decades ago used to only unlatch the locks and latches but leave the door(s) on the hinges attached to the chasis. This was realized to be unsafe before the 1980s and they started manufacturing them so the door or pane came off completely when the lever was pulled.
