Is this sentence grammatically correct?

His dogs tackled him with joy when he got home.

    It's grammatically correct, but no one would say that.  You can't tackle someone with joy.  If you want "joy" in the sentence:  HIs dogs joyfully tackled him in greeting.

    "tackled" works just fine, but "with joy" sounds odd.

    No.  'Tackled' is not the right word.

    You could say 'greeted' - that would work.
